The Public Library – Abundantly Yours

In the past few months, many newspapers, magazines and Web sites have reported an obvious increase in public library usage throughout the nation. Most of these reports conclude that the uncertainty of the economy is the main factor that is driving more people through the doors of the library. This seems like a logical conclusion. The public library is, after all, free and available to everyone. I find it difficult to stop at this conclusion, though. I’d like to suggest that there are more factors that play a part in the increase in public library usage. Consider this: People know that their public library is a place of abundance! And

they want to be a part of it.

What do I mean by abundance? In the context of the public library, I use the word to refer to the many layers of opportunity, service, learning and enrichment provided by one organization. From books to business research, it is all offered to our community on a daily basis. From personalized reference service to storytimes that delight all ages, the public library supplies. From intimate study rooms where

student minds work quietly to a theatre thundering with applause after a musical presentation, you will find it all under the same roof. The story of the abundance of the public library is being told in new and different ways. And people are listening…and responding.

Does our public library often struggle with a tight budget? Yes. Do library staff members have to do creative gymnastics to cover desks, programs and outreach? Yes. Are there opportunities for growth and expansion we’d like to pursue? Yes. Right here and right now, is the public library alive and prospering and offering the community a wealth of services and experiences? Yes. Your public library moves orward with a spirit of abundance—even when times are tough.

Boulder Public Library is a very special place indeed. We, like many public libraries across the county, have also seen notable increases in our usage over the past year. The public library grows stronger as the community responds to it. So, how can you be a part of the abundant life of your public library? I have a few suggestions:

1. Consider volunteering to support a library project or program. Call 303-441-3114 to find out more.

2. Pick up a few library card applications and offer them to a new family in your neighborhood, a friend or coworker.

3. Take an informal tour of Boulder Public Library’s four locations. Let the staff know what you think of the art displays, the collection or the programs that are being offered.

4. Bookmark the library’s web site (boulderlibrary.org) and visit our research and database page to find top-notch information about your latest curiosity.

5. Let the public library be your new meet-up place with friends or social groups. You can even meet over coffee and a snack at the Espress-Oh! Café on the bridge at Main Library.

Perhaps you, your friends and family can come up with more. (If you need a little inspiration, come visit any of our four locations. Inspiration is certainly a layer in the library’s abundance!)
