The Boulder Public Library (BPL) will phase VHS tapes out of its collection by the end of 2008. The VHS tapes are being eliminated due to declining circulation, inability to get new VHS materials for the collection, and the current VHS tapes becoming worn and damaged. Eliminating the VHS collection will allow more space on the shelves for the higher-circulating DVDs, CDs and other media.
BPL currently has 3,897 VHS tapes in its collection, with only 14 percent checked out as of last week. In comparison, BPL has 8,536 DVDs in the collection, and last week 36 percent were checked out.
“Circulation for VHS tapes has continued to decline for years, with more and more of the tapes sitting on the shelves gathering dust.” said Access Services Manager Jennifer Miles.
Library patrons at the main library and the Meadows and Reynolds branches will be able to purchase the VHS tapes directly off the shelves for $1 each during the week of Monday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 15. All sales are final. Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase new DVDs and CDs. Any items not sold during the sale week will be recycled.
