Boulder Public Library circulation up

According to recent reports, public library use tends to increase during times of economic downturn and Boulder is experiencing the same customer use trend. The Boulder Public Library (BPL) offers various cost-free resources to ease monetary stresses and help weather an economic crisis, from job search assistance to free computer and Internet use, to borrowing books and movies rather than buying them.

In the first six months of 2009, BPL materials circulation (checked-out books, movies, CDs, etc.) is up 9.5 percent over the same time period in 2008. Circulation of DVDs is up 22 percent, children’s library materials circulation is up 12.3 percent, and walk-in visitors are up 9.8 percent at the library system-wide.

Library materials circulation for January through June at all BPL branches from 2007-2009 is as follows:
2009 = 686,003 items
2008 = 626,370 items
2007 = 595,789 items

“The public library still offers the best in information resources as well as educational and entertaining experiences for all ages,” said Library Director Tony Tallent. “As we see a steady increase in the usage of our services and resources, we are very aware that the community understands the value its library offers.”
